How do you stop a dog from chewing?
I have a pit bull/lab mix that we adopted when she was about 4 months old. We have had her since late april 2007. She always has food and water. is an inside dog and always has chew toys out to play with we give her a ton of attention. She just will not stop chewing up our stuff. She has eaten well over $100 in make up, a $200 pair of sunglasses, slippers, receipts, and tonight a $75 nike oregon ducks jersey. nothing works to get her to stop chewing up our stuff. HELLLLLPPPP
I guess i should also mention that she only does this when we are gone. it’s just not feasible to take her everywhere with us. Even when we are only gone for a few minutes. I can’t spray stuff on our clothes. I’m not here when she does it.
We do appreciate all the answers so far.
There are a few different things that work, but what works best for me is a spray that you aplly to whatever it is that your dog is chewing i believe it is called bitter apple or sour apple and as it sounds it is sour! you can get it at basically any pet store! But for things that cannot have spray i would suggest ~Keep him in sight, on lead or confined in a crate or small room.
~Put away things he likes to chew
~Keep doors closed to rooms you do not want him in
~Work on his “Leave it” and “Out” commands
~Teach him to work for a living — perform a positive behavior in order to earn attention, food, treats, walks, and playtime. ~This will help establish you as leader and prompt him to pay attention to you.
~Give him more exercise
~Stay CALM when you see him chewing.
~If need be, let him drag a leash around attached to a FLAT, nontightening collar WHEN YOU ARE HOME so you can easily get a hold of him to CALMLY remove the item if he chews on something
~Stuff a sterilized bone or small Kong toy with cheese or peanut butter. Kongs are excellent chew toys. For creative ways to use them, see http://www.kongcompany.com/how2use.html
~Rotate his toys to help keep him interested in them When possible, apply an anti-chew product at items he likes to gnaw on If he is on puppy food, consider changing him to a good quality adult food
Braided Bully Sticks â Are They Good For Small Dogs?
Braided bully sticks or beef puzzles are a very healthy treat for small dogs to chew on. They are becoming more popular than rawhide bones or cooked bones. You will find them advertised as being made from beef tendons or muscles and this is no lie, but what remains unsaid is that the sticks are actually made from bull penises. Most people don’t want to know about it and even feel repulsed; hence braided sticks were put on the market as an alternative.
The bully sticks can be purchased in various sizes depending on how small your dog is and if you have no objection to where the sticks come from you can buy them plain, if you do, get the braided or ringed varieties. The actual length of the bully stick is about 40 inches long and after a long and thorough process it is cut into smaller lengths. You can find them very easily in an of the specialty dog food stores, departmental stores and other dog stores and maybe even in your vet’s office. Of course the internet is flooded with information about online stores that sell them. You can get small packets or buy them in bulk; for small dogs the stick will probably last a good week.
Braided bully sticks are an all natural dog chew and some of the brands do not use any preservatives or chemicals. An even safer bet is to buy the sticks that come from free range cattle and organically fed cattle. There are many benefits in giving your dog these sticks to chew. The bully sticks contain approximately 80% of protein in the dried form and are a good source of glucosamine which helps your dog to develop healthy joints. The best advantage really is that he will be so busy chewing on the bully stick he will forget all about that nice cushion or those bedroom slippers just begging to be shredded!
The sticks are not without some risks. If your dog chews of a big piece and then swallows it whole, he can choke. It is best to give the dog the chew treat while you are around to keep an eye on him, especially small dogs who are very determined.
Braided bully sticks last longer than rawhide and can be easily digested because they are all natural dog treats.
