Dogs 101 Part 6 – What Is A Pinch Collar?
For old-time trainers, the pinch collar was the sole collar to use.
Also called a prong collar, a pinch collar definitely is an efficient and effective coaching tool.
Those who use one for the 1st time regularly reference it as power steering. We jokingly call it the spiritual collar as it makes a rapid convert out of the dog.
According to our vet, who is also an authorized animal chiropractor, the pinch collar is usually the safest coaching collar. From our point of view, it is also the most efficient coaching collar.
Pinch collars come in four sizes : big, medium, tiny, and micro. We’ve never used or commended the big size as it appears to once have been made for elephants. For a huge, powerful, and rambunctious dog, the medium size is more than sufficient. For Golden Retrieversized or smaller dogs, the little size is enough.
For toy dogs, use the micro version, which has to be ordered. Any collar or piece of coaching appliances can be misused or abused.
The desire of the user is the secret to achieving a harmonious relationship thru coaching The pinch collar does rub some folk the wrong way, because it seems like a medieval instrument of torture. Others consider it inhumane.
Folks’s perception of a specified piece of appliances is beside the point. What counts is the dog’s perception, and your dog will tell you. Does your check have the specified effect on the dog’s behavior?
Are you putting your dog in a situation where you can sincerely praise him for the proper reply, or are you irritated with him and calling him names? Yes, dogs have feelings, too! In choosing coaching appliances, bear in mind the circumstances.
A dog’s touch sensitiveness, or edge of discomfort, increases proportionally with the interest the dog has in what interests him. For instance, when you train Tommy in your yard, where there aren’t many distractions, a buckle collar might be acceptable to make him reply.
When he is out in real life and wants to follow another dog, you could have to employ a coaching collar to make him mind. Does all this mean the pinch collar is the right solution for each coaching problem or each dog? Not at all, but it is the right solution under certain circumstances
