Ok, I need some help here.?

I will be getting a Weimaraner puppy on September 8th. I am aware of the GENERAL items I should buy for my puppy, but I would like a more detailed list. For example, how many toys, what kind of bowls, what kinds of leads and leashes, any extra information you have really. I have had a dog before (two actually), but I have never had a Weimaraner. So if you know exact products for a Weim puppy, then help me out please. And we are also going to purchase a comfort thing with the heartbeat simulator for when we have to run errands.

Congrats on the new puppy. Kongs are good for active puppies – what puppies aren’t active, but these toys are great for aggressive chewers. I am not sure about the heartbeat device. Anything that would replicate you being there would probably only cause a worse case of separation anxiety and even if he didn’t have it – probably start it. When leaving a dog by itself, make the entrances and exits very bland, do not say the dogs name just enter or leave, anything you say or do to the dog will only cause excitement and make the situation of entering and exiting stressful.

I suggest a crate. some people are either for it or against it. I had to get one because my dog was eating my house. I feed him in there from time to time and he finds it rather cozy – it’s his own space or den. I need only look at him and point at the crate door and he goes in willingly – that takes positive training. I only leave him in there for up to 5 hours at a time. Some people will say more and others will say less. Also dog’s won’t go to the bathroom in they sleep. This will save your carpets from being ruined. I always make sure he goes to the bathroom before I put him in his crate before I leave for 4 hours or so.

Collar – I suggest a Martingale collar. All you need is a dog to back out of a regular collar once to chase a cat and to need something better. A Martingale collar can be purchased at a PetSmart or PetCo and are great. they close up only 2 or so inches when the dog pulls away. This allows the collar to tighten but not choke like a slip lead or choke chain, but does not allow the collar to go over the head.

Leash – do not buy a flexi leash. the ones that extend 10 or more feet. They only teach your dog to pull and the tiny rope can sever fingers and break them. A dog that is 10 feet in front of you can;t be corrected in time if it decides to go chasing after something full speed. The plastic handle device will either be ripped from your hand or you will be taken to the ground. True regular leashes can to the same thing but if you have them on a short regular nylon or leather leash you can anticipate them quicker and react in time if the dog is right next to you.

Bowls – stainless steel metal bowls do just fine. they don’t hold orders like the plastic or pottery kind and can be put in the dishwasher with out disintegrating.

Lastly – walk your dog every day for at least and hour or some other interactive playtime. Make sure the dog know the rules of the house you establish. Be consistent and he/she will too.
Only reward good behavior and ignore or correct the behavior you do not find acceptable.
