Mastiffs Love To Gaurd Your Home
The breed of Mastiff is a great companionship dog for animal lovers. If you want to have a Mastiff in your home, you need to prepare in advance and be ready to devote time and effort to making the dog comfortable during the transitional period. A Mastiff needs to have constant human interaction and feel like a part of the family. Other than just a dog for companionship, a Mastiff is great to use in the guard dog capacity because it has an imposing presence that will ward off trouble from possible intruders.
If a Mastiff gets a sense of suspicion from a person, they will pace the door and start barking. When they are guarding, they will raise their hackles and start giving off a threatening stance. Anyone who encounters a Mastiff exhibiting this type of behavior is likely to be startled, because the dog can be quite threatening and ferocious. However, because of the dogs large size, the Mastiff as a breed, is not a dog that is by nature aggressive, they are more on the gentle side under average circumstances.
A well-adjusted, happy Mastiff is always at the ready to go into protection mode for the family, if the need ever occurs. You will only be able to gain a better understanding of Mastiff temperament when its guarding behavior comes out. These dogs are normally a mellow giant and are not known to display aggression.
Since Mastiffs need human attention, more so than other dogs, it is wise that the dog lives indoors. If you leave the dog alone, tied up or confined outside, with minimal human contact and interaction, it can develop anxiety which comes out in the form of destruction. With the absence of family time, it is highly probable the dog will become detached and become less bonded to the family.
When in guarding mode, a Mastiff will bark to warn away possible intruders. If you allow guests to interact with the Mastiff in your presence, it will come to know there is no threat and begin to act normal again. The presence and bark of a Mastiff is a highly effective deterrent against home invasion. By nature, this dog will be territorial and instinctively protect their family and property. Mastiffs are a breed that easily bonds with other dogs and cats, as long as they have been introduced under proper circumstances.
As a breed, Mastiffs are a dog known to be great with children, gentle and tolerant of tugging of the ears and tail, and is even know to give children rides on their back. They are very affectionate towards children and prone to smothering them with kisses. Remember that the tail of a Mastiff is quite strong and one swipe is enough to accidentally knock over a small child.
As with any breed of dog, it is never a good idea to leave a child alone with a dog until they are older, no matter if the dog is an adult or pup. With the proper training, your Mastiff will be a more than adequate guard dog for the home.
