Domestic Baby bunnies born Sunday in large dog cage with mom. 1 got out. Should I put a dog bed in to contain?
They were born in large dog kennel that is under a tree in our back yard on the ground. There are large openings in this cage and today one wiggled out and went a great distance in the yard — could have been eaten by a hawk. With them being just born on Sunday we are afraid to move them to the real bunny cage because I have read that if the mother is disturbed or made nervous she could eat their heads off. I just washed our poodle’s dog bed and wonder if I should pick each of them up with a rag and put them each in the doggy bed with the fur that the mother pulled off herself. Would that work? Or should I surround the cage with towels so none of them wiggle out. Again, obviously they should be in a bunny cage, but what can I do now with them being so young and dependant on the mother to nurse them…I don’t want her to shun them and them die.
You need a rabbit nest box. And yes they all need to be in the rabbit hutch. It is very true that handling the babies can cause the mother to reject them and in some cases eat them. However if you rub your hands all over the mothers face and head (especially her nose) every time you handle the babies it will GREATLY decrease that risk.
I wouldn’t use the dog bed. That is not the nest she made for them and the smell is not her or her babies and would most likely do far more harm than good. For the time at hand the “plug up the holes” angle is going to be your better bet. And see above for handling the babies safely.

This will be the size of bed you need to get. If you find it difficult to measure your dog sleeping, try measuring with your dog standing. This will give you a slightly longer measurement but will give you a rough idea what size you are looking for.
If you invest in a good quality dog bed that is washable, it may last the life time of your dog. Buying a cheaper bed is a false economy as these will quickly wear out.
