How do I keep my dog from clawing up molding and carpet around door?

I have always kept my dog inside a cage when I am out of my apartment, however now I am trying to slowly train him to be out of his cage while I am gone. He has free roam of the apartment except for the bedroom and so far the only thing he seems intent on destroying is the carpet and molding around the front door. It looks like when I’m gone he is trying to dig his way under the door so the carpet and wall molding is getting all torn up.

The molding can be sanded down and repainted but since I don’t want to pay a large fee when I move out for them to replace the carpet, does anyone have any suggestions for what I can do to keep him from further destruction? :-)

Keep him in his crate.

Good Luck
