Training a Australian Shepherd to herd sheep?
Does anyone know a good book or a site online that talks about training (just tips and commands) an Australian Shepherd to herd a flock of sheep. My parents purchased one. I know how to train obedience and i know it must start there, but i have never trained a sheep dog before. If anyone knows any good sites or books on tips and commands, that would be great. I know it takes a lot of time and patience, as does the obedience, but just a little help to get me started would be awesome. I tried to contact an breeder/trainer of Ausie shepherds, and she was rather rude to me, stating you cannot learn from a website or book, you MUST take them to a personal trainer. I know you cannot learn all from a book, but if you have the basics, I believe you can work from that and build with your dog, so please no lectures on that. I have trained obedience, stated before, my work with my old pup was great, won many awards w/ her. So training plain obedience is not a problem. Thanks for any help.
I trained a border collie to herd sheep. I had a job herding sheep for a big outfit. I was given a 4 year old trained dog and a 4 month old puppy, a horse, a wagon, and a herd of sheep.
The older dog could trot behind the horse but I tucked the pup inside my coat and I rode out to the sheep. The pup woke up from his nap inside my coat, stuck his head out…looked at the sheep and BARKED…The Sheep departed hastily, scattering all over the landscape and I spent the rest of the afternoon rounding them up.
First lesson in sheep dog training..How do I get the dog to bark when I want and how do I get the dog to to stop barking when I want?
For Me: The Key to sheep herding is Starting and Stopping Selected Dog Behavior.
I would recommend a trainer but I did it alone..out on the range and in a few months the dog was a good working dog.
I did it because I had to do it..It is nearly impossible to herd 1800 head of sheep without good dogs.
The Key to the entire thing..is Starting and Stopping Selected or Instinctive Behavior..
If you have the dog and the sheep..take the dog out to the sheep on a lead and just hang around. Watch for behaviors you want and encourage them. Then add a unique cue word to each individual behavior..Use a “stop word” (I use “that’s enough”) to end the behavior. The most important thing is being able to stop the dog at exactly the point you want the behavior to stop.
Good Luck..A trainer would make it so much easier..I would have given a lot to have a trainer or even some advice so if you can find one..I recommend you do go to a trainer.
