I am trying to figure out if my dog is rat or patterdale terrier?
He is 23 lbs at 25 months old, very good at listening and following directions but fearful of loud noises, very sweet and loving, deathly afraid to ride in the car and shakes very bad when doing so even with medication. He is tan and black with some of his hair short and some long. Short hair on head and face and long hair on tail and underbody. When I bought him from a rescue mission the lady thought he was a datsun/chihuahua mix. I realized he wasn’t when he outgrew a purse at a few months old. I was told he looked like a beagle/shepherd mix but have found no pics resembling him. I have found pics of terriers that look like him (patterdale and rat terriers). His ears go straight up and fold down into a v shape and are very soft like roses as well as his head. What do you think?
I own a rat terrier, know a lot of other ratties and since I compete in agility and also do a lot of classes, see many other breeds. However, I’m not that familiar with a Patterdale Terrier so that is the knowledge background I’m coming from.
1. A Rat Terrier has a big chest and significant tuck-in (ie: no belly). It’s like a greyhound or whippet’s body with a stubbier tail and shorter legs. So try looking at the siloutte of your dog.
2. A rattie also doesn’t have long body hair and especially on the belly. In fact, a rattie is much like a greyhound or whippet in that they have very little hair on the belly.
3. Button ears (what you’ve described) aren’t the norm on ratties but aren’t uncommon. And as for a beagle mix, the ears would be a dead give-away.
To me, this does not sound like a rat terrier or rattie mix. The body doesn’t sound right, the coat doesn’t sound right (either on the body or especially on the belly).
If he’s got short legs with the button ears, you might be looking at some kind of Type-B Teddy Roosevelt Terrier mix or more likely some corgi mixed in there. You might also look at a Manchester terrier mix possibility–that seems to fit the size, coloration of your dog. MT’s don’t usually have the kind of coat length you describe but that could be a result of a mixed breeding.
As for the behavior, that is individual temperament.
