Are the dog treats (i.e iced cookies) sold in mall pet stores bad for dogs even if just a rare treat?
For my puppies first birthday I would like to take him to get one of the iced cookies or similar treats sold at mall pet stores. However, I know these stores are not the most knowledgeable when it comes to the well being of dogs, so I just wanted to make sure this wasn’t going to be a bad idea.
I know Petsmart sells dog candy bars and things, would those be better?
This isn’t something we would do everyday, probably just on birthday’s. Normally everything I give him is all natural, I.e. innova evo dog food, natural treats, etc.
Thanks
Fancy treats every so often won’t hurt your dog. Just make sure that you’re only giving them to your dog periodically and not too much at a time otherwise the richness could cause digestive upset.
Since it seems like you try to stick to the natural food brands, I would try something from Three Dog Bakery (check the link below to find a local store–they even sell mini doggie birthday cakes!), or try the treat section of your local Petsmart. Blue Dog Bakery (brandname, not a store like Three Dog) has a variety of yummy natural treats, and Nylabone actually has a great “Healthy Edibles” bone snack in a variety of flavors as well.
The doggie candy bars (called Bark Bars) you mentioned aren’t bad either for a special occasion. Just remember that you don’t want to be giving the big fancy treats to your pup very often.
