Bringing a new dog home. What should I get for him?
Yes, I know some things that we will need to get him. Like: A dog bed, toys, a leash and collar, food, treats, a kong, and so on. Anyway, I was wondering specifics. If I am getting an American Eskimo, do you think I should get him the flat kind of dog pillow/bed so I know he fits in it? What kind of treats works for your dogs? Is raw hide bones bad for them? My friend told me this… Also I am just looking for specifics… brands of food that are good, toys that dogs like more then others, anything pretty much. This will be our first dog, so any information is great!
Thanks for the information so far! He is from a shelter. We are looking for a crate, he is a bigger American Eskimo… do you think it is important to have one RIGHT away? Or can it wait a week or two.. we want to get it cheaper, like off of Craigs List, instead of full price at the pet store….
Congratulations on your new furry friend! How exciting!
I would recommend that you go to your local bookstore or even pet store and purchase a copy of “Dogs for Dummies”. It’s a great little book and will give you LOTS of useful information. You might even find a book about the particular breed of dog, but the “Dogs for Dummies” is a good generic book.
If you don’t know much about American Eskimo Dogs, look at the breed information on the American Kennel Club website at www.akc.org. There is a lot of useful information there.
Where is your dog coming from–a breeder or previous owner, or a shelter? If from a breeder or previous owner, I would definitely ask them about what the dog has been eating, what kind of toys it likes, and what it is used to sleeping on. It is hard on the dog to have a drastic food change, and can cause some tummy upset or not eating. You don’t want to have your new buddy go through that if you can avoid it. The dog will have enough to get used to with out a new kind of food, too..
.
I do add some vegetables and other things to my dogs’ food: canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix), no-salt canned green beans, carrots, plain yogurt, bits of cheese, a little peanut butter. If your dog will eat some veggies, go for it, but avoid ONIONS in any form as they are toxic to dogs.
A website you need to keep handy: http://www.acreaturecomfort.com/toxic.htm This is a comprehensive list of Plants, Fruits, and Vegetables known to be toxic to dogs. Keep it bookmarked and handy because you never know when you will need it. I hope you don’t, but it’s good to have.
You will need a veterinarian, and it is better to have one lined up early on before you need one for an emergency. Perhaps the breeder/previous owner can suggest someone or their vet can help you locate someone near where you live. If the dog has health records established, be sure to request that copies are sent to the new vet. (Just like you would do when you find a new doctor for yourself…)
I would definitely invest in a kennel crate. It’s a good way for him to travel any real distances, but it can be your dog’s “safe place” in your house where he can sleep, rest, or just hang out. He doesn’t have to be locked in all the time, but you will want to crate train him so that he gets used to being shut in it, too. The crate should be large enough for him to stand up, turn around comfortably, and lie down without having to curl up to fit. Talk to someone at the pet store and have them help you. An American Eskimo dog can be as small as 9″ tall or as large as 15″ +/-… you need to know what size your dog is or will be, and plan accordingly for the crate. If it’s a puppy, go ahead and buy the crate for the adult-sized dog, but block off the back part of it until the pup grows into it. There are wire “crates” and molded plastic ones. I use the plastic ones, but have had the others, too. I prefer the plastic ones as they are easy to wash, can be broken down for storage, and don’t have to be covered for the dog to have privacy. The wire crates are open so the dog never has a sense of a “nest” unless you cover it. You can find crate pads to put in the bottom of the crate, or you can give the dog some old towels of yours. You want to have things that are washable, because they do get dirty, and accidents do happen. Whatever you put in the dog’s crate, it should have enough padding to make him comfortable.
I have both crates with pads in them and some large pillows for my dogs. The crates are in the dog area at the back of our house near the doggie door to the yard, the pillows are in the family room. All of the pillows are flat, but I don’t think it really matters as long as it is comfortable. I like to find thick pillows designed for dogs, and have even gone so far as to get a twin sized memory foam pad and cut it down to fit inside the pillow cover.
If you have areas of the house that you don’t want the dog in, you might invest in a couple of kiddie gates to put across doorways or halls. Our dogs are confined to our kitchen, dining room, and family room where they are on hardwood floors. They also have access to a bathroom, where I keep a large water bowl. When we go out of the house, the dogs are kept in an area where their crates are and they have an doggie door so that they can go in and out to the yard on their own. I do not leave my dogs outside all the time, although they do have good shelter out there.
Get a couple of good sized, heavy-bottomed bowls for food and water. Some people swear by the stainless bowls, others the heavy plastic. Some like ceramic, but I’m afraid of breakage. Whatever you choose, run them through the dishwasher about once a week, and rinse them out between washings. I have “place mats” on the floor to help keep the mess contained a bit. You might also want one of those 2 or 3-gallon bottles that fits on a bowl base to make sure your dog always
