What would be the Best Breed that suits me?

I would like eather a
1.Border Collie
2.German Shepherd
3.Labrador Retriver

I have a medium size yard i would like a dog i can exercise with every day and not get tired. I do not mind grooming. And I would love to train the dog a lot of obedience and I would like to play with the dog frisbee and freestyle so basically the dog has to be smart and not get bored easily.
can you please tell me what breed better suits my needs.

Thank You very much.

Well a border collie is going to definitely fit the bill on all accounts. Just be aware that for your needs they would essentially be the ferrari of the dog breeds meaning that they are very good at the job but are only well suited for that kind of stuff. A relaxing, quiet day is not a border collie’s idea of a good time and will frequently result in it staring at you all day, wanting to do something. If that’s ok with you then it would be a great breed for what you’re after. The dominate frisbee and are well suited to obedience. Agility might be a good pursuit to add to the mix if you end up with one.

The GSDs are masters of obedience but frisbee and freestyle aren’t their forte. They are too big to do the rapid acceleration and deceleration and jumps. I’m sure your familiar with the way they run and the low hind end conformation which doesn’t lend itself well to real aggressive frisbee. Plenty are capable of catching frisbees but they aren’t terribly well suited for it and it can be hard on their joints. Also if by exercise, you mean jog, I wouldn’t put them at the top of the list either though it depends on your fitness level. They are obviously capable of going jogging but if you’re a strong distance runner, they aren’t the best choice. The flipside is that they are much less intense than border collies and very pleasant dogs to have around. They are also great watchdogs.

Labs are awesome all around and will somewhat meet the criteria but not with flying colors. Well bred ones can be smart but not like the other two. They can go for jogs but not too long or in hot weather. They can catch frisbees but aren’t as agile and athletic as the border collies. Again they are generally less intense than borders and generally nicer to have on non-working days.

As far as other breeds go my first recommendation would be a weimaraner. Particular attention must be paid to finding a well bred dog as there’s a prolifieration of them out there that are so far from what the breed is they’ve given rise to a less than stellar reputation. A well bred one would fit your needs extremely well and can go from working full out with great energy to lounging on the couch watching tv very happily. They are very athletic and if fit can jog with even the most dedicated distance runners as well as make amazing flying leaps to snag frisbees which they take to happily. One of my dogs made a 35 mile bicycle ride with me (shouldn’t be attempted without proper consideration of conditions and fitness, this was a working field trial dog in top condition). Basically I went riding and carefully monitored her, planning on stopping as soon as she looked tired or her pads showed wear. She just kept on wanting to do more until I finally called it a day. They are also very smart, possibly too smart, just like border collies. If you’re in an area that gets fairly warm at some point in the year, they have the edge in that they are more tolerant of heat with the shortest coat but they also handle cold well as long as they are actively working.

Similar breeds in the same class (german shorthaired/wirehaired/longhaired pointers, and vizslas) have very similar talents and the doberman is worth mentioning as virtually the same (including the need to find a well bred one and the reputation poor breeding has gained them) minus hunting ability.

A belgian malinois is very similar to the border collie in terms of awesome suitability to the obedience, jogging, and frisbee jobs and are one of the few, if only, breeds that can match them for pure performance in those areas. I kind of think of them as border collies of the police dog world. They are very driven and unbelievably athletic. They also open up the world of schutzhund (as do the GSDs, Dutch shepherds, dobermans, and weimaraners, yes weims can do it quite well) if that’s something you might be interested in getting into. I encourage you to at least check it out as it’s amazing.

Dutch shepherds are very much like malinois but most I’ve known are a touch less intense (varies by breeder/line/raising) and they can be more interesting looking if you’re into the brindle look. They also come in shorthair, longhair, and wirehair varieties.

A bearded collie would also suit but if that’s the route you go, it’s good that you don’t mind grooming.

Australian cattle dogs and the similar breeds are also worth a look. They are darn smart and amazing athletes. Again, like the border collies, they aren’t a dog that you can just switch off.

There are plenty of other breeds that would suit but those are what I would consider the top ones.

The Golden Doodle Dog is a rare dog breed because it is actually a mix of Poodles and Golden Retrievers. But then, they grow as big as Golden Retrievers. These dogs are friendly and intelligent too. In Michigan, you can get them for $350 to $450.

Havanese Dogs come from the dog breed called the Bichons. These dogs can be very playful. However, they are perfect for certain jobs like termite and molds detection. These dogs may also work for the disabled or the impaired as signal dogs. With proper training, they can become police dogs too. They are very helpful in tracking and sniffing objects. If you want, it is also possible to train this breed to be therapy dogs. You can almost do everything with Havanese Dogs because they are easy to coach. They are actually the favorite participants of dog contests on fly ball games, obedience training, freestyle musical canine, and dog agility competitions. If you want to buy this breed, you have to prepare at least $500 to $700.
