Should I get another dog?
We got our first dog a few years ago from the pound, and he suffers from extreme separation anxiety. We have tried everything: crates, gates, toys, bones, even medication from the vet. He hurt himself in the crate, and eventually broke it, and the meds have helped, but not enough to stop him completely. We are just worried that it is getting so bad, that he’ll end up hurting himself. He does enjoy being around other dogs, but need to know if it will help stop his anxiety attacks. Thanks!
It will probably help a lot. It will take some time to be effective though, the dogs will need to work out who is alpha dog, probably the new one, because the first sounds like it would be pretty submissive. It will also help if you enroll in an obedience class. That will help build the bond between you and the dog and it may not be so worried when you leave.
My Golden has separation anxiety and we got a puppy to keep her company. So far it is working really well.
