dog question: she doesn’t chew!?

Why won’t my dog chew her toys, play tug, or gnaw non-rawhide bones?

Background: picked up from pound a week ago, already spayed, 5 year old mixed border collie tricolor.

Detail: Sam will chew the rawhide I give to her. American-made, peanut-butter, brown colored, but turns white after she licks it. …but if i try to get her to chew a non-rawhide item…like those nylabone, ropes, etc. she just ignores them! Her previous owner must have been one disciplinarian!!!

Comments? also, if you do get rawhide, what kind do you get? How about those huge rawhide bones?

My dogs won’t touch the things you bought either!
But loves rawhide bones or pigs ears,.. make sure you get a large enough rawhide bone that does not break off easily.
I’ve hear of dogs choking on some.
Guess rawhide is tastier than the others.

Who Destroyed the Shoes?

Three dogs live in the house on the corner of Main St. and Smithton Lane. Earlier today, Jane, her husband Gary and her son Mike got up, went through their morning routines and then headed out. Returning at 5:00, Jane let the dogs outside to go to the bathroom and then called them back in. After sorting through the mail, she looked up and discovered that Gary’s new leather shoes had been destroyed.

Angry and upset, Jane looked over at the three dogs and yelled at them, telling them to “Get over here now!” All three dogs, Spike, Summer, and Trey, lowered their heads and walked over slowly, each one avoiding eye contact with her and refusing to look at the destroyed shoes.Picking up the scattered shoe debris, Jane menacingly asked what happened. When they didn’t respond she put them outside.

Gary and Mike arrived. As soon as they came in, Jane told them that the dogs had destroyed Gary’s shoes. Gary sighed and sat down.Jane told him that the dogs were disobedient and that she was tired of having to pick up after them. Gary disagreed, saying that they didn’t know any better and reminding her that they had made a deal – each person was responsible for taking care of one of the dogs.

Jane was strict with Spike. She believed that problems originated when dogs got too full of themselves, so she stressed her position as top dog and made sure Spike never forgot it. She was very consistent in telling him what he could not do. Just two days ago she had yelled at him when he tried to take food off her plate when she left the room.

Gary was more lenient. He liked Summer a lot and thought of her as his pal. A Lab, she was good natured but rambunctious and she loved to get into things. Gary knew this but had been too busy doing other things.

Mike and Trey are best friends. Mike takes Trey out for a walk in the morning before school and then a jog in the evening. They love to play and hang out, often using toys to interact. Trey has a few plush dog toys, a Kong toy, and a couple of socks for playing tug of war. Trey loves to chew and is given free run of the house when the people are away.

Jane and Gary were still discussing the dogs when Mike entered the room and announced “I’ve found the other shoe.”

Jane, Gary, and Mike got up and went to the utility room where the dogs had mats, crates, water, etc. The other shoe was in fact in the room, resting on a mat, half chewed and clearly identifying the culprit.

Mike reached into Trey’s crate and removed his Kong toy. The toy was empty, having been cleaned out of its breakfast mixture of kibble and peanut butter, the same treat Mike left for Trey each morning. Trey’s favorite chew toy – a rubber Nylabone, was also in the crate. It was a little moist from Trey’s devoted chewing during the day. The shoe was not in Trey’s crate, nor were any pieces of leather.

Mike never let Trey play with rawhide or shoes. Mike also taught Trey which toys were appropriate to play with and then made sure he had interactive toys available during the day. With exercise in the morning and toys for the day, Trey was neither bored nor frustrated. Knowing what he could chew on, he spent his day doing the right things. It wasn’t Trey.

Gary walked over to Summer’s crate. Unlike Mike, he hadn’t walked Summer that morning. Nor had he taught her what toys were appropriate. But he had managed the environment. Because Gary knew that he had neglected his training responsibilities, he always secured Summer in her crate during the day. It wasn’t as much fun as Trey had, but it kept her out of trouble.

Jane looked on at the other shoe. Half chewed, leather pieces scattered, the evidence all over Spike’s mat. Although Jane was strict and quick to tell Spike no, and although Spike would be scared to act up in front of her, he’d never learned what toys he could play with. So, bored and looking for entertainment he went and found a shoe. It didn’t smell like the scary lady – it smelled like the nice guy. So he chewed on it for a little while. And that was fun. So he chewed and chewed until he heard someone come home. That’s when he went out to meet his family and see how their day went.

Dogs chew on items inappropriately because of boredom, because of poor management of the environment and because they’ve never been taught what they can chew on. Dog training is sometimes viewed as a long list of commands and orders (Sit, No!, Leave It!), but really it’s about spending quality time with your dog, teaching him the House Rules and giving him a set of behavior guidelines that he can follow.

In this story only Mike took the time to train his dog correctly. He taught Trey the house rules, established himself as the pack leader, exercised Trey and prepared him for the day ahead by giving him a stuffed Kong and a favorite chew toy. These simple steps put Trey in a position to succeed.

Succeeding in dog training is easier than you think. Not sure if you’re a Jane, Gary or Mike? Want to transform your dog from being a Spike to being a Trey? Dog Academy has just the thing for you.
