Scene from Saving Private Ryan I dont understand?
I’ve seen the movie like 10 times and I love it. It’s just amazing. But theres this one scene. Okay so Tom Hanks and his group are in a camp and all these army people are walking by. Then he tells Jackson to start looking through dog tags to find Ryan. But then Jackson and Reiben and that Jewish guy start to mess around and the medic, who dies later, comes over and says “These aren’t poker chips, the whole ***damn airborne is watching.” I dont understand. I mean its a war, people are gonna die eventually so why is it so bad? Also, why are all those army people walking by? Theres so many of them.
The medic gets upset because while all those troops are walking by they are joking around while looking through the dog tags almost making a mockery of the dead they represent. If they had just been sifting through them quietly and no one was walking by then he might not have cared. But since they were using them as “poker chips” while the soldiers of the unit the dead guys were from were walking by and watching it was a big deal. The soldiers were all massed together like that because they were re-consolidated after the airborne assault and were moving out to a follow on assignment to either attack german positions or fortify a town.
