Why are dog booties required equipment in the iditarod dog sled race?
Dog booties protect the dogs feet from harsh conditions like jumble ice, and prevent snowballs from forming between the dogs toes which can cause painful injuries, scrapes, or splits in the pad. Snow may look fluffy white, but it can be very harsh. like sandpaper. In extreme cold and some snow conditions paws can ice up with packed or rough snow. This can cause a dog to change their gait because they are uncomfortable, eventually leading to soreness or injury.
Ultimately the are required because they are necessary ensure the teams well being and health on a long journey. But I can say that even if they were not mushers would still be bringing nad using them. They train with them regularly anyhow, knowing that is the best way to keep the teams feet in good condition over long runs.
